Reading eggs

 Reading Eggs
Reading Eggs supports each child’s learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons. The online lessons allow your child to progress at their own rate, gradually building their reading confidence and rewarding them at every step of the way.
And the best part is that children love it.

The programme makes learning to read fun and highly motivating for children aged 2 to 13 years – nurturing a lifelong love of reading, straight from the family home.

It's so easy to get started with Reading Eggs. Pupils sit a Placement test ensuring they begin working through the programme at their own level. Each child was sent a username and password which you can use to access the programme. If you want more information or to log in from your computer click the link below.

He fought for the rights of Irish people in the British parliament and managed to change a lot of things for Irish catholic's over his lifetime. He led a very interesting life.

Mondrian art.
To tie in with your work on area this week we are going to look at the artist Piet Mondrian.
He was a Dutch artist best known for his abstract paintings. Art that is abstract does not show things that are recognisable such as people, objects or landscapes. Instead artists use colours, shapes and textures to achieve their effect
When Mondrian made his paintings, he would always mix his own colours, never using the paint directly out of a tube. He often used primary colours – red yellow and blue – as in this painting
Mondrian did not use a ruler to measure out his lines! He thought carefully about where to place the lines, like those that you see in this painting. Notice how the red, yellow and blue are placed to the side and the centre of painting doesn't have any colour. Mondrian often used colour and composition in this way. (A composition is the arrangement of shapes and images in a picture).
Although he is best known for his abstract paintings made from squares and rectangles, Piet Mondrian started out painting realistic scenes. He especially liked painting trees. This week I want you to create your own Mondrian painting. You could copy one of his own here or you could pick an animal and colour it in the Mondrian style. To start look at the video about his life. If you want to draw an animal in the Mondrian style click on the PDF animals to give you an idea where to start. Best of luck.

Mathletics

Mathletics

Mathematics at home

Mathletics at home is a program that  can reinforce what learners have covered at school. It is an enjoyable program that challenges children with tasks on different math's topics and games that they can play against a timer or other children around the world. They can even play against their own classmates if they are logged on and playing at the same time.
To start the children need to download the app mathletics students from the app store or google play.
Alternatively using a home computer you can log in at https://login.mathletics.com/
You will need a username/email and password which I will send to you via Aladdin and See saw. This is unique to you. Once logged in the easiest thing is to watch the video in the home page (be aware that it doesn't seem to be on the laptop version). I have also posted it on see saw. It explains very clearly how you can use Mathletics. If you have any problems don't hesitate to contact me via See saw or by email coralstownfifth@gmail.com.
Have fun!

You can record how you got on by using pictures, a short video on see saw or writing it up in your copy. Rivers and seas
Our rivers and seas are an important part of our lives. We depend on them for a lot of things. For travel, for water, for our wildlife. The power of our rivers can be harnessed to create electricity. Fishermen depend on our seas and rivers for fish. However our seas and rivers can have a negative effect on people as well for example when rivers flood or sea levels rise in storms. I want you to read about Carla from Honduras who lives close to the sea. Climate change is affecting her and her friends life in a big way in Honduras. There are also some videos to explain climate change and climate justice and how they effect poorer countries.

Can you do some research on one of these poorer countries and see how climate change may be affecting them. I have included an example of a factfile of a Honduras (picture below) here as an example to help you get started. You could write about a country that is affected or how rising sea levels happens. You could also write a diary by someone like Carla who is affected by climate change. Here are some websites where you can find information about climate change and rising seas in various countries:
